Te mapa
Sidoarjo lies just south of Surabaya in East Java, on the delta formed by branches of the Brantas River. The town centre, with its alun-alun square and main roads, sits inland. To the east, the map breaks into a vast grid of tambak fishponds that stretch toward the Madura Strait. These ponds form a geometric pattern of water and embankments.
The fishponds explain much of the town's identity. Sidoarjo is known for its shrimp and milkfish, and it is often called the shrimp city. The Porong River marks the southern side of the regency. Toll roads and the railway run north to south, linking Sidoarjo closely with Surabaya's wider metropolitan area.
A Sidoarjo map poster also records a more recent landscape feature. Since 2006, the Lapindo mudflow near Porong has covered a large area with mud, now held behind embankments. On a map of the wider regency it appears as a large bounded shape south of the town, a reminder of how much the land here has changed.
East of town, rectangular tambak ponds extend toward the sea in a tight, repeating grid, one of the most graphic features of the East Java coast.
The town square and surrounding civic streets form the traditional heart of Sidoarjo, where the main roads converge.
The broad river channel to the south carries Brantas water to the strait, a strong curving line across the flat delta landscape.

Koteā ko Sidoarjo
Sidoarjo is often just called Surabaya's neighbour, but people who live there know it as a place with its own centre, coast and food. The map gives the town its own frame.
