Te mapa
Surabaya, the capital of East Java and Indonesia's second-largest city, lies on the flat coast of the Madura Strait. The port of Tanjung Perak occupies the northern waterfront. The Kalimas River runs north through the centre to reach it, a straight line of water that once carried goods into the heart of the colonial city.
The oldest districts lie in the north, near the port. There, Dutch-era buildings, Chinese and Arab quarters and old markets sit close together in a denser, less regular pattern. Further south, the city opens out along long avenues toward newer business districts, and toll roads and housing estates extend the map in every direction except the sea.
Surabaya is known as the City of Heroes, after the Battle of Surabaya in November 1945, which is commemorated by the Heroes Monument near the centre. The Suramadu Bridge, Indonesia's longest, crosses the strait to Madura. A Surabaya map poster captures the port city, its river and the long bridge reaching out across the water.
The river runs straight through the city toward the port, lined by roads and older buildings. It forms the clearest north–south line on the map.
The harbour fills the northern coast with piers, basins and container yards. It gives the map a strong, working edge where the city meets the Madura Strait.
The bridge leaves the north-eastern shore and crosses the strait to Madura in a long straight line. It is one of the most striking features when the map is framed wide.

Koteā ko Surabaya
Surabaya is a city of trade and family ties, and many people who hang it have moved to Jakarta or abroad. The port, river and bridge give the map a sense of connection, which suits a place that has always looked outward.
