Krasnokamsk stands on the Kama River west of Perm, where the river has been widened by the reservoir system of the Urals. On a map, the broad water takes up a large part of the frame, and the town sits along its bank with the straight, planned blocks you would expect from a Soviet industrial settlement.
The town grew in the 1930s around a large paper mill, and that origin can still be read from above. Industrial sites and rail spurs sit near the river, while housing districts are laid out in regular rows and courtyards behind them. Forest and open ground close in around the edges.
