Te mapa
Kratié lies on the east bank of the Mekong in northeastern Cambodia. The map is organised by the river: the town stretches along the waterfront in a series of streets running parallel to the bank, while the Mekong itself spreads wide across the frame, broken by long sandbanks and islands. Directly opposite the town lies Koh Trong, a large river island.
The town centre keeps a number of French colonial-era shophouses facing the river, and a riverside promenade runs along the bank. Kratié is also known as the base for seeing the rare Irrawaddy dolphins that live in deep pools of the Mekong a short distance upstream, one of the last remaining populations of the species in the river.
A Kratié map poster places the river at the centre of the composition. The water's width, its islands and its shifting sandbars form large, soft shapes, while the town's streets line the bank in a narrow, orderly band. It is a map of a place that exists in close conversation with its river.
The town's main streets run parallel to the Mekong, lining the east bank in a narrow band that faces a very wide stretch of water.
A large island sits in the river opposite the town, its long outline one of the most recognisable shapes on the poster.
Deep pools of the Mekong upstream of Kratié are home to one of the river's last populations of Irrawaddy dolphins, the town's best-known attraction.
