Te mapa
Kuiya lies in the Hotan area of southern Xinjiang, in the belt of oases along the southern rim of the Taklamakan Desert. Settlements here depend on water flowing down from the Kunlun Mountains, and that dependence is written across the map. Roads, canals and field boundaries run in long, parallel lines, and nearly everything is arranged around getting water to the land.
From above, the oasis appears as a patchwork of narrow fields separated by rows of trees, with villages and farmhouses strung along the roads. The more built-up centre is small and compact, and the edge of the cultivated area is sharp: beyond the last fields, the land turns to open gravel and sand.
A Kuiya map poster presents this landscape in its simplest form. The black-and-white treatment reduces it to lines and spaces, so the drawing reads almost like a woven textile. It is an unusual and quiet subject, and a good choice for anyone connected to the region or drawn to the geography of desert oases.
Canals and ditches carrying mountain water run through the settlement in long straight lines, organising the fields and roads around them.
Roads in the oasis are often lined with rows of trees, dividing the cultivated land into long, narrow strips visible on the map.
The cultivated area ends abruptly where water no longer reaches, leaving a clear boundary between the oasis and the open desert beyond.

Koteā ko Kuiya
For people with family roots in Kuiya or around Hotan, the map is a way of keeping a remote home close. Its pattern of fields and water channels is unlike most city maps, which also makes it an interesting piece in its own right.
You can personalise the title and subtitle, in any script you like, and edit the coordinates line. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Download the $9 HD files, or order a matte printed poster with an optional frame.
