Te mapa
Kurakhove grew in the twentieth century around a large thermal power station on the Vovcha river, west of Donetsk. The river was dammed to create a reservoir that supplied the plant, and the town took shape along its shore, with residential districts, industrial areas and the power station all visible as distinct zones on the map.
From above, the reservoir is the strongest feature: a long, irregular body of water bending through the landscape. Street blocks sit on its banks, planned apartment districts give way to smaller houses, and railway lines and industrial sites mark the working side of town.
Kurakhove has been severely damaged during the war, and for many former residents the map now carries memory as much as geography. A Kurakhove map poster records the town's layout as people knew it: the water, the plant and the streets they walked between them.
A long reservoir on the Vovcha shapes the whole town, its curving shoreline forming the main edge along which streets and districts were built.
The thermal power plant and its surrounding industrial land form a separate block of large structures and rail sidings, clearly different from the residential grid.
Regular blocks of mid-century housing sit beside areas of smaller houses, a mix typical of towns built around a single large industry.

Koteā ko Kurakhove
For people who lived in Kurakhove, or whose families did, a map can hold the town as it was: its streets, shoreline and neighbourhoods. It is a quiet, dignified object to keep at home, wherever that is now.
