Te mapa
Mariupol lies on the northern shore of the Sea of Azov, where the Kalmius River meets the sea. On a map the central districts follow a regular grid on raised ground above the coast. Very large steelworks extend to the east and north, and port facilities line the waterfront. The shoreline curves away towards long beaches and spits.
The city was founded in the late eighteenth century. It grew into one of the main industrial centres of Ukraine, home to the Azovstal and Illich steel plants and a major port on the Azov coast. In 2022 Mariupol was besieged and heavily damaged, and a large part of its population was displaced.
A Mariupol map poster records the city's shape as many people remember it. It shows the central grid, the river mouth, the industrial giants along the water and the long coast. For many people, the map carries memory as much as geography.
The Kalmius enters the sea just east of the centre, dividing the city. Its lower course and mouth form a key natural feature on the map.
Vast steelworks and port areas line the coast and riverbanks. They appear as large, dense zones that are very different in texture from the residential districts.
The historic centre follows a regular street pattern on the bluff above the sea. Parks and squares break up the blocks, and the layout reads clearly.
