Te mapa
Makiyivka lies directly east of Donetsk in the Donbas, and on a map the two cities almost merge. Rather than a single compact centre, Makiyivka is made up of many districts that grew around individual coal mines and works, connected by roads and railway lines across open steppe. The result is a scattered, polycentric pattern unlike most European cities.
The city's history is closely tied to coal and steel, with mining beginning in the nineteenth century and a large metallurgical plant shaping its growth. Spoil heaps, the conical waste hills left by mining, still mark the landscape around the city. Small rivers and reservoirs add irregular lines between the built-up clusters.
A Makiyivka map poster records the layout of a city built around industry, with its separate settlements, rail connections and open spaces between them. For people from the Donbas, many of whom now live elsewhere, it can be a way to keep a detailed picture of home, drawn simply and without commentary.
Districts grew around individual mines and plants, forming separate clusters of streets that give the city a scattered, patchwork appearance on the map.
Railway lines and sidings thread between the districts, once linking mines and works, and now tracing clear lines across the open ground.
Spoil heaps and small reservoirs sit between the settlements, reminders of the mining economy that shaped the surrounding landscape.
