Te mapa
Novocherkassk was founded in 1805 by the Cossack ataman Matvei Platov as the new capital of the Don Cossacks, on a hill between the Tuzlov and Aksai rivers. The city was planned from the start, and its map still shows that clearly. Broad, straight avenues lead to a central square with the Ascension Cathedral, and triumphal arches stand at the main approaches.
The Military Ascension Cathedral, one of the largest Orthodox churches in Russia, dominates the skyline and stands at the heart of the street plan. Novocherkassk is also a university city, home to the South Russian State Polytechnic University, and an industrial centre with a large electric locomotive plant. The river valleys around the hilltop keep much of the land beyond the centre open.
A Novocherkassk map poster reads as a nineteenth-century plan: long avenues crossing at right angles, the cathedral square where they meet, and river lowlands forming soft borders on either side. It is one of the most clearly designed small cities in southern Russia, and its geometry needs no decoration.
The Ascension Cathedral stands on the main square at the top of the hill. The city's principal avenues extend from this point across the plateau.
The long, straight avenue named after the city's founder runs through the centre. It is one of the axes that give Novocherkassk its ordered, stately layout.
The Tuzlov and Aksai valleys run below the hill on either side. Their low meadows and meandering channels contrast with the geometric streets above.
