Te mapa
Shakhty grew up around coal, and the map still shows it. Instead of a single compact centre, the city is a loose collection of districts, many of which began as settlements beside individual pits. Between them run railway lines, ravines and open ground, so the street pattern appears in separate clusters linked by long roads across the steppe of the eastern Donbas.
The name itself means mines in Russian, and for most of the twentieth century coal mining defined the city's economy and identity. Conical spoil heaps, known locally as terrikony, still rise around it and remain one of the most recognisable features of the landscape. Many mines closed in the 1990s, and the city has since shifted toward other industries.
The historic centre has a more regular grid, with straight streets laid out in orderly blocks, from which the newer districts extend outward. A Shakhty map poster records this unusual structure: a city built in pieces across the steppe, shaped by what lay underground as much as by planning above it.
Separate clusters of streets mark the former pit settlements, each with its own small grid, linked to the centre by long roads across open land.
Railway tracks cross the city in several directions, a legacy of coal transport, and they cut clean, straight lines through the pattern of districts.
Gullies and small river valleys wind between the neighbourhoods, leaving gaps of open ground that give the map its distinctive broken rhythm.

Koteā ko Shakhty
For people who grew up in mining families, or who remember the city from a particular era, this map holds a strong sense of place. Its scattered districts make an unusual, almost archipelago-like composition on the wall.
