Te mapa
Kushima occupies the southern end of Miyazaki Prefecture, where the hills of south-eastern Kyushu run down to the Pacific. The municipality is large and mostly green, with the main town near the coast and smaller settlements linked by roads that follow valleys and the shoreline. On a map, the coastline itself is the main event, full of bays, rocky points and small beaches.
Two places here are known across Japan. Cape Toi, at the prefecture's southern tip, is home to Misaki horses, a small native breed that has lived there in a semi-wild state for centuries. Just offshore lies Kōjima, the island where researchers observed macaques washing sweet potatoes in the sea, a famous episode in the study of animal behaviour.
A Kushima map poster frames a landscape where people have settled lightly: a modest town grid, winding coastal roads, and a great deal of shoreline and forest around them. The town takes up only part of the frame, and the rest belongs to hills and water. It is a composition of edges and open space, well suited to the softer Paper and Sand styles.
The headland reaches into the Pacific as a long promontory with a winding access road, a bold shape at the edge of the coast and the home of the Misaki horses.
A small island close to the shore appears as a clear, isolated form in the water, best known for its resident troop of Japanese macaques.
A road hugs the indented shoreline, tracing bays and rocky points and linking the town to fishing settlements scattered along the coast.
