Te mapa
La Esperanza is a municipality in Guatemala's western highlands, next to the city of Quetzaltenango. The two have grown toward each other, and on a map the boundary is hard to see. Streets run from one into the other across the same high valley, more than two thousand meters above sea level.
The town center follows the pattern of many Guatemalan towns: a main square with a church and a loose grid of streets around it. Farther out, the grid gives way to roads that follow field edges and gentle slopes. Houses line these roads in narrow strips that reach into the farmland of the valley.
Mountains and volcanic peaks rise around the Quetzaltenango valley and form the setting even where the map shows only streets. A La Esperanza map poster centered on the town includes its edge with the larger city. It shows how small highland communities and regional centers now share one continuous urban area.

Around the main square, the blocks form a modest grid in the Spanish colonial tradition. This is the most regular and densest part of the composition.
At the edges of town, roads follow field boundaries and gentle slopes. Houses line them in narrow strips that fade into open ground.

For families from the highlands, and for the many Guatemalans who have settled abroad, a map of home keeps the familiar streets close. It also suits anyone who studied Spanish or volunteered in the Quetzaltenango area and wants to remember the place where they lived.
