La Goulette is the port of Tunis, built on a narrow strip of land that separates the Lake of Tunis from the Gulf of Tunis. The name refers to the throat, the channel that connects the lake to the sea. On a map, the town is squeezed between two large areas of water, with streets running along the thin strip of land.
A navigation channel runs across the lake toward the capital, a straight line through open water. The TGM light railway, which links Tunis with the northern suburbs, follows a causeway across the lake and then runs along the coast through La Goulette.
The town is known for its sixteenth-century fortress, built during the Spanish occupation, for its ferry port, and for its fish restaurants. A La Goulette map poster shows a place shaped by water on both sides, with the port basins, beaches and old fortress set along the edge of the Mediterranean.

Harbour basins and the old fortress sit at the mouth of the channel, where the lake meets the sea.
