Lakshmīpur is the headquarters of its district in the Chittagong Division, near where the Meghna widens into its estuary. The land is low and flat and shaped by water. Canals, small channels and household ponds are everywhere, and the street network bends around them rather than cutting straight through.
The town centre is a dense cluster of lanes and markets. Beyond it, settlement continues in long strips along roads and embankments, with rice fields and waterways in between. This linear, water-bound pattern is typical of the lower delta and very different from the neat grids of planned cities.
