Te mapa
Lalibela sits at around 2,500 metres in the Lasta highlands of Amhara, on a slope below steep, eroded mountains. Its houses and lanes follow the contours of the hillside, stepping up and down in irregular terraces, and roads wind in from the surrounding valleys rather than meeting in any regular grid.
The town is known for its eleven medieval churches carved from the rock, attributed to King Lalibela of the Zagwe dynasty around the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries and inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1978. A channel running between the church groups is named the Jordan, part of a design often read as a new Jerusalem.
A Lalibela map poster shows these features in an unusual way: the churches sit below the surrounding ground, so they appear as small, sharply defined shapes set into the fabric of the town. Around them, the looser pattern of paths, homes and open land spreads across the slope toward the valleys below.
The churches are gathered in two main groups, with one more standing apart, each set into trenches and courtyards cut straight down from the hillside.
The Church of Saint George, carved in the shape of a cross and standing on its own, is one of the most recognisable forms on any plan of the town.
Lanes and footpaths climb and curve across the slope, following the ground instead of a grid, so the town's outline stays irregular and organic.

Koteā ko Lalibela
Lalibela is a place people remember for a lifetime, whether they came for a pilgrimage such as Genna, the Ethiopian Christmas, or on a long journey through the highlands. The map holds that memory in a restrained form suited to a study or entrance hall.
Add the date of your visit, a family name or a line of your own to the title and subtitle, and keep the coordinates as they are or edit them. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand for the final look.
