Te mapa
Langxiang is a town in Heilongjiang province, in the Lesser Khingan mountains of China's far northeast. From above, the town occupies a valley floor, with streets running along the valley and forested hills rising on both sides. Beyond the built-up area, the map is dominated by woodland and the courses of small rivers.
The town grew as a forestry centre, and timber shaped its economy for decades. It is known for the Langxiang forest railway, a narrow-gauge line originally built to carry logs out of the forest and now run for visitors, one of the few such lines still operating in China.
A Langxiang map poster shows a place defined by its terrain: a narrow band of streets following the valley, with the larger shapes of the hills and forest around it. The result is a spare, natural composition, far from the dense grids of big Chinese cities.
The town is built along a valley floor, so its streets form a long, narrow band that follows the shape of the land between the hills.
The narrow-gauge Langxiang forest railway, once used to haul timber, still runs as a heritage line and is the town's best-known attraction.
Forested slopes of the Lesser Khingan range surround the town, leaving wide open areas on the map around the settled valley.
