Te mapa
Lào Cai sits in the far north of Vietnam where the Nam Thi River joins the Red River, which forms the border with China at this point. The Chinese town of Hekou lies directly across the water, and on the map the two settlements face each other across the river channels, linked by bridges.
The city is the gateway to the mountains of the northwest, including the town of Sa Pa, and the railway from Hanoi ends here close to the border. As a result, Lào Cai combines the role of a trading border town with that of a transport hub for travellers heading into the highlands.
A Lào Cai map poster shows a city stretched along its rivers: streets packed along the banks, newer districts extending south along the valley, and steep ground pressing in from both sides. The water and the border give the composition a strong and unusual structure.
The Nam Thi meets the Red River beside the city centre, a clear fork of water that anchors the map and marks the border with China.
Bridges cross the rivers between Lào Cai and Hekou, short but significant lines that connect the two countries on the poster.
Newer districts run south along the Red River valley, forming a long, narrow band of streets hemmed in by hills.

Koteā ko Lào Cai
Lào Cai is a place of arrivals and departures, the last stop on the railway and the start of the mountain roads. A map of the city makes a fitting reminder of a journey or of home in the north.
