Te mapa
Kaiyuan is a county-level city in the Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture of southern Yunnan. Like many towns on the Yunnan plateau, it occupies a basin of flat land between mountain ridges, where fields and villages spread across the valley floor. From above, the town appears as a dense cluster of streets surrounded by an open agricultural pattern.
The centre follows a fairly regular grid, with newer districts extending along wide roads toward the edges of the basin. Rail and highway corridors cross the area on their way through southern Yunnan, following the easiest lines through the terrain. Beyond the town the mountains rise, and the street network thins into scattered settlements.
The metre-gauge railway built in the early twentieth century between Kunming and the Vietnamese border passed through Kaiyuan and helped the town grow as a regional stop. A Kaiyuan map poster keeps the view simple: a firm urban core, a patchwork of farmland and the outline of the hills that define the basin.
Flat valley land holds most of the streets and fields, and the edge of the built-up area follows the base of the surrounding slopes.
The core of the town is laid out in fairly regular blocks, giving a clean, rectangular texture at the centre of the map.
Railway and highway lines cross the basin in long, confident strokes, linking Kaiyuan to Kunming and the south of the province.

Koteā ko Kaiyuan
For people from Honghe or anyone who has lived in Kaiyuan, a map of the town is a quiet, specific reminder of home. The contrast between dense streets and open basin works well in a simple print.
