Qujing lies on the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau, about 1,900 metres above sea level, in one of the wide, flat basins that interrupt the surrounding hills. The city has spread across this basin floor with few obstacles, and from above its structure is dominated by long, straight avenues that meet at right angles, with the low hills appearing as a soft frame around the edges.
The Nanpan River, the upper course of the Pearl River's western branch, begins in the hills just north of the city and flows through the basin. Here it is still a modest stream, drawn on the map as a thin, winding line crossing the planned districts. Its source area at Maxiong Mountain is a well-known local landmark.
Qujing has grown quickly as an industrial and transport centre for eastern Yunnan, linking the province with Guizhou and the rest of southern China. Its central district combines a small older core with generous modern blocks, parks and wide boulevards.
