Te mapa
Lawrence was built on purpose. In the 1840s investors from Boston chose this stretch of the Merrimack River for a new industrial city and built the Great Stone Dam to harness its flow. On a map, the planning is still clear. Canals run parallel to the river on both banks and feed long rows of mill buildings, with a grid of worker housing behind them.
The river divides the city in two. On the north side are the downtown, the Campagnone Common and the densest streets. The Spicket River winds through from the north and meets the Merrimack near the mills. The layout of the south bank is looser. Several bridges link the two halves, and they appear on the map as short, precise crossings.
Lawrence is known for the 1912 textile strike, often called the Bread and Roses strike, and for generations of immigrants who came to work in its mills. A Lawrence map poster shows the industrial layout that brought them there: dam, canals and mills set out as one system.
The dam, built in the late 1840s, crosses the Merrimack in a firm line. It was the reason for the city's existence and sits at the centre of its map.
The North and South Canals run alongside the river and separate a narrow strip of mill buildings from the rest of the grid, a clear sign of a planned industrial city.
The smaller river winds through the northern neighbourhoods before joining the Merrimack. Its curve contrasts with the regular streets around it.

Koteā ko Lawrence
Many families in Massachusetts and further afield trace their history back to Lawrence's mills. This map shows where that history happened. The structure of river, canal and grid is clear and graphic in black and white.
You can use the title for a family name, the subtitle for the year someone arrived and the coordinates line for a particular street. Then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, as $9 digital files or a matte printed poster.
