Leioa is on the right bank of the Nervión estuary in Bizkaia, just before the river widens into the Abra bay. It is part of Greater Bilbao but feels different from the industrial districts across the water. Its terrain is hilly and mostly residential, with houses, apartment blocks and green spaces between them.
The largest single feature on the map is the main campus of the University of the Basque Country. Faculty buildings, parking and landscaped grounds spread over a large area of the town's slopes. Around it, streets curve to follow the hills. The Metro Bilbao line runs along the edge of the town.

Estuary edge
The town's western side runs toward the Nervión as it widens into the bay. The waterline adds a strong boundary on one side of the poster.
