Leutkirch im Allgäu lies in the south of Baden-Württemberg, in rolling countryside between Lake Constance and the Alps. From above, the town is a compact medieval core with a long central square and short, winding lanes, ringed by later districts and then open fields. Roads leave toward villages scattered across the hills, and small streams run through the surrounding pasture.
Leutkirch was a Free Imperial City of the Holy Roman Empire, answerable only to the emperor, and its old town retains the layout and many buildings from that era.
