Te mapa
Laudio / Llodio stretches along the valley of the Nervión river in the north-west of Álava, close to the border with Bizkaia. The valley floor is narrow, so the town is long rather than round. The river, the railway and the main road run side by side, and neighbourhoods climb the slopes wherever the ground allows. Past the last buildings, wooded hills close in on both sides.
That linear form is what makes a Laudio / Llodio map poster so easy to read. The dark ribbon of streets follows every bend in the river, bridges stitch the two banks together, and short lanes branch uphill toward farmhouses and hamlets. It is a typical Basque valley pattern, where industry and housing were fitted into the little flat land the mountains left.
The town grew through the twentieth century as a manufacturing centre, connected by rail to Bilbao a short way down the valley. Its double name joins the Basque and Spanish forms that are used side by side, and both appear on road signs, maps and official documents across the municipality.
The river winds through the centre of town, and the main road and railway closely track its curves, forming three parallel lines that organise the whole map.
Residential streets rise in tight zigzags on the valley sides, leaving dense clusters of blocks separated by steep open ground that shows as white space.
Several bridges link the two banks within a short distance, and on the poster they look like small stitches holding the long, narrow town together.

Koteā ko Laudio / Llodio
People who grew up in the Aiara valley, or who commute between Álava and Bilbao, often recognise Laudio from its shape alone. The poster shows that long, river-bound outline in a restrained way that suits modern flats and older homes alike.
