Te mapa
Lorain lies on the southern shore of Lake Erie, about thirty miles west of Cleveland, where the Black River enters the lake. From above, the straight shoreline and the river mouth set the map's strongest lines. Breakwaters reach out into the lake to shelter the harbour, and the city's street grid spreads south and along the shore on both sides of the winding river.
Lorain grew as a shipbuilding and steel town, and its large mill along the Black River once drew workers from dozens of countries, earning it the nickname the International City. The Lorain Lighthouse stands at the harbour entrance, and the novelist Toni Morrison was born here in 1931. A bascule bridge carries traffic over the river near its mouth.
A Lorain map poster shows how the lake, the river and industry together shaped the city. The open water fills one side of the frame, the river cuts a curving line inland, and the grid of residential streets fills the rest. It is a clear, simple picture of a Great Lakes working city.
The river meanders north to Lake Erie through the middle of the city, with industrial land along its lower banks and a bridge crossing near the harbour.
Long breakwaters extend into the lake from the shore, drawing thin lines on open water and marking the entrance where the lighthouse stands.
Residential streets form a regular grid running back from the shoreline, giving much of the map a steady, even pattern of blocks.
