Lucélia is a municipality in the west of São Paulo state, in the Alta Paulista region. Like many towns in this part of Brazil, it was founded in the middle of the twentieth century as farming spread west across the plateau. Agriculture is still central to the surrounding economy.
From above, the town is a clear planned grid of regular blocks, oriented along the gentle slope of the land. The grid is easy to read on a minimalist map. At its edges, the streets end and the landscape of fields and pastures begins, with small streams in the shallow valleys.
