Te mapa
Lukulu lies in Zambia's Western Province, on the upper Zambezi near the northern end of the Barotse floodplain. The river is the defining feature. From above, its channels, lagoons and oxbows spread over a very wide, flat valley that floods every year during the rainy season and dries back into grassland.
The town is built on higher ground beside the river, safe from the seasonal water. Its streets are few and loosely arranged, with a small centre and roads running out into the surrounding countryside. On a map, the settlement is modest compared with the huge natural shapes of the Zambezi around it.
The floodplain has long shaped the life of the Lozi people of this region, with movement and farming following the rise and fall of the water. A Lukulu map poster captures that relationship: a small town next to one of Africa's great rivers, with the floodplain filling much of the frame.
The river winds through the landscape in several channels, with curves, islands and sandbanks that give the print its most striking lines.
A broad, flat valley on either side of the river floods each year, appearing on the map as a wide open space crossed by old channels and lagoons.
Lukulu's streets are built on firmer, higher ground above the plain, a small cluster placed where the land stays dry.

Koteā ko Lukulu
Lukulu is far from most maps people hang on their walls, which is part of its appeal. For people from Western Province, or for travellers who know the Zambezi, it is a meaningful and uncommon print.
Add your own title, subtitle and coordinates, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. It is available as a $9 HD download in six print sizes or as a printed poster shipped from local partners.
