Te mapa
Chililabombwe is the northernmost of Zambia's Copperbelt towns, close to the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The town grew around copper mining, and on a map that history is easy to see. Planned residential areas with curving streets and regular plots sit beside the broad, open shapes of mine workings and industrial land.
The street layout reflects a company-town origin: tidy neighbourhoods, main roads linking them, and open ground between districts. Beyond the town, the land is flat to gently rolling bush, crossed by roads heading toward the border and the other Copperbelt towns to the south.
The town was known as Bancroft during the colonial period, and it is closely linked to the Konkola copper mine. The name Chililabombwe is often translated as the place of the croaking frog. A Chililabombwe map poster shows a working town in clear lines, with its neighbourhoods and the mine side by side.
Residential areas show ordered layouts with repeating plots and gently curving roads, a pattern typical of towns built around a single major employer.
Large areas of mining and industrial land appear as broad open shapes, contrasting with the fine grain of the residential streets beside them.
A main road runs north toward the Congo frontier, giving the map a clear direction and linking the town to the wider regional network.
