Te mapa
Ndola lies in the south-eastern corner of Zambia's Copperbelt, a short distance from the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its map shows a central grid of broad streets and large blocks, laid out in the colonial era and surrounded by residential suburbs, industrial areas and rail lines. The land rolls gently, with small streams and wooded areas on the outskirts.
Unlike the other Copperbelt towns, Ndola grew mainly as a commercial and industrial centre rather than around one large mine, with railways, refining and trade at its core. The city is also known internationally for the 1961 plane crash nearby that killed UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld. A memorial now marks the site.
A Ndola map poster brings out the confident order of the centre and the looser suburbs around it. Wide main roads, the railway running through and the green space between neighbourhoods give the image a roomy, relaxed feel. It is quite unlike the denser mining towns farther west along the Copperbelt.
The city centre follows a regular colonial plan of wide streets and large blocks. It is easy to read on the map and anchors the composition.
Rail lines connecting Ndola with the rest of the Copperbelt and with Lusaka to the south cut long, clean lines through the city.
Around the core, residential areas spread out in curving streets and open plots, with green space between them that gives the poster room to breathe.

Koteā ko Ndola
Ndola is where many Zambians studied, worked or started families, and for others it is the gateway to the Copperbelt. A map of its streets is a personal keepsake for people who have moved to Lusaka, South Africa or farther away.
