Te mapa
Machadinho d'Oeste lies in the north of Rondônia, in the western Brazilian Amazon. The municipality grew out of a planned settlement project in the 1980s, when families from other parts of Brazil were given plots along newly opened roads. From above, the pattern is unmistakable: a compact urban grid, and around it a system of long straight side roads running into the forest, each lined with farm lots.
This settlement design gives the map its character. The rural roads, known locally as linhas, cross the land at regular intervals, and cleared farmland along them contrasts with remaining forest and protected areas between them. A Machadinho d'Oeste map poster shows the town at the centre of this carefully planned network, a snapshot of how the Amazon frontier was organised.
The town itself has wide streets and regular blocks, with a few main avenues leading out toward the roads that connect it with the rest of the state. Rivers and streams wind through the forest around it, their irregular curves breaking the straight lines of the settlement plan. In black and white, the contrast between geometry and nature is strong.
