Te mapa
Parauapebas in southeastern Pará grew rapidly after the opening of the Carajás iron ore operations, among the largest in the world. It became an independent municipality in 1988, and much of the city dates from the years since. This shows in a street pattern of new neighbourhoods added one after another along the main roads.
The Parauapebas River runs past the urban area, and the land around it is gently rolling. On a map the city appears as a spreading patchwork of blocks. Some are regular and some follow the terrain, and open land and forest press close to the outer streets.
To the west rise the hills of the Carajás National Forest, a protected area that also contains the mine. A Parauapebas map poster records a town that is still growing, and captures its current outline at one moment in that growth.
New residential districts spread outward from the older centre, each with its own block pattern. The poster reads as a series of distinct pieces joined along arterial roads.
The river that gives the city its name winds along the urban edge. It adds a soft, irregular line to a composition otherwise dominated by roads.
The road to the Carajás mining area leaves the city and heads into the hills. On the map it is a reminder of the industry that shaped the town.
