Te mapa
Madera sits on the flat floor of California's San Joaquin Valley, north of Fresno. The land is almost level, so the city is laid out on a grid, and the rectangular pattern continues beyond the streets into the fields around it. Farm roads extend the grid across the valley toward the horizon.
Two lines interrupt this order. Highway 99 runs diagonally through the city, and the Fresno River winds across it in a narrow, irregular band. Railway tracks follow the highway corridor. This mix of a straight grid, a diagonal highway and a curving river gives the map more interest than the flat terrain might suggest.
The name comes from the Spanish word for wood, a reminder of the lumber that was once brought down from the Sierra Nevada. Today, the area around Madera is known for agriculture, with vineyards and nut orchards covering much of the land. A Madera map poster shows the city and its fields as one pattern.
The river takes a meandering course through the otherwise regular city, one of the few curves in a landscape of straight lines.
The main valley highway and the rail line alongside it cut through the grid at an angle, forming the strongest single line on the map.
Square-mile roads and orchard blocks extend the street grid out into the valley, so the city blends into its agricultural surroundings.

Koteā ko Madera
Madera is home to many farming families and people who have worked the valley for generations. A map of the city and its fields reflects that connection between town and land.
Add a family name, a ranch or a year to the title and subtitle, and adjust the coordinates. The poster is available as Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
