The municipality meets the bay along a ragged edge of mangroves and river mouths. This makes it one of the most intricate coastlines in the Rio area.

Te mapa
Magé lies at the far northern end of Guanabara Bay, across the water from Rio de Janeiro. Its southern edge is a low, irregular shoreline of mangroves and river mouths. From there the land rises gradually northwards to the forested slopes of the Serra dos Órgãos. Separate settlements are scattered along the roads between the bay and the hills.
The municipality has an important place in Brazilian transport history. The country's first railway, built by the Baron of Mauá in the 1850s, started from a pier in Magé's territory. Passengers from Rio crossed the bay by boat and continued by train towards the mountains. Traces of that route are part of local memory.
A Magé map poster shows the transition from water to mountain. At the bottom is the bay's broken edge of inlets and marsh. In the middle are the town centres and the roads that link them. Towards the top, the streets thin out against the hills. In black and white, the coastline alone makes an arresting shape.

Brazil's first railway line began here in the 1850s. It linked a bay pier to the road towards the mountains.
To the north, the streets give way to the forested lower slopes of the Serra dos Órgãos. The map ends in open, rising ground.
