Te mapa
Magway lies in the dry zone of central Myanmar, on the eastern bank of the Irrawaddy River, and is the capital of Magway Region. On a map, the town stretches along the river, with a grid of streets behind the waterfront and roads leading inland across flat, dry country. The town of Minbu lies on the opposite bank.
A long road bridge now crosses the Irrawaddy between Magway and Minbu, replacing the ferries that once connected the two banks. The town is known for the Mya Tha Lun Pagoda, which stands on a rise near the river, and the region around it has long been associated with oil production in the Irrawaddy valley.
A Magway map poster is shaped by the great river. Its broad channel and sandbanks take up a large part of the frame, shifting the balance between land and water, while the town's streets form a neat, compact pattern along the shore, linked to the far bank by the long straight line of the bridge.
The wide river runs along the western side of the town, with sandbanks and shifting channels that make water the largest element of the map.
The road bridge to Minbu crosses the Irrawaddy in one long straight span, a single line connecting two towns across a very wide river.
The Mya Tha Lun Pagoda stands on higher ground near the water, a landmark within the grid of streets that fills the town behind the riverbank.

Koteā ko Magway
People from Magway living in Yangon, Mandalay or abroad often want an image of home, and the river makes this one instantly recognisable. It also appeals to travellers who have crossed the Irrawaddy on the long bridge.
