Maisons-Laffitte Map Poster & Print
Maisons-Laffitte lies on the left bank of the Seine, northwest of Paris. On a map the town has two very different parts. Near the station and the river there is a denser old centre. Beyond it lies the Parc, a large residential area laid out in the nineteenth century, with long straight avenues that radiate across the map and meet at roundabouts.
At the centre stands the Château de Maisons, designed by François Mansart in the seventeenth century and considered one of the key works of French classical architecture. In the 1830s the banker Jacques Laffitte bought the estate and divided the grounds into building plots. This is how the town got both its name and its avenues.
A Maisons-Laffitte map poster shows why the town is called the cité du cheval. Training tracks and a racecourse along the river are part of the map, and the avenues were designed with riders in mind. Jean Cocteau was born here. The overall drawing is geometric and airy, framed by the curve of the Seine.

Mansart's seventeenth-century château stands at the meeting point of the avenues. It serves as the historic anchor of the town's layout.
