Te mapa
Maitland grew on the Hunter River in New South Wales, north of Newcastle, and it is one of the oldest inland settlements in Australia. The river loops across a broad floodplain here, and the map follows it. The historic High Street curves with the old bank, and the suburbs spread over higher ground away from the water.
Floods have shaped the city's history, most famously in 1955, when a major flood caused severe damage and led to lasting changes in how the city was protected and settled. The Hunter floodplain between the town areas still shows as wide open land. Nearby Morpeth, a historic river port, sits downstream on another bend.
A Maitland map poster brings out this relationship between river and town. There is the meandering Hunter, the curve of the main street, and the neighbourhoods placed on higher land. It is a thoughtful subject for people who know the Hunter Valley and for anyone drawn to landscapes where water has clearly shaped the settlement.
The river bends across the plain in wide meanders. On the print they form a sweeping line through the heart of the map.
The heritage main street follows the curving line of the old riverbank. It is a rare example of an Australian main street that is not straight.
Large unbuilt areas along the river mark the floodplain. They separate parts of the city and give the composition a spacious, airy feel.

Koteā ko Maitland
Maitland suits Hunter locals, people with family roots in the valley and anyone who has visited its heritage streets. You can add a family name, the year you moved or the coordinates of a favourite spot to the title and subtitle.
The print comes in five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Paper and Sand suit the heritage character. Blueprint turns the river loops into something close to an old survey plan.
