Maku lies in West Azerbaijan Province, close to Iran's borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan's Nakhchivan exclave. It is known above all for its setting: part of the old town sits directly beneath an enormous overhanging rock face, so the houses look as if they are tucked under a stone roof. On clear days, the snow-covered cone of Mount Ararat can be seen from the surrounding area.
The valley is so tight that the city stretches along its floor in a long, thin ribbon instead of spreading outward. A river runs through it, and the main road follows the same line toward the Bazargan border crossing. Steep slopes on both sides leave only a narrow strip for streets, which gives Maku an unusually long, slender outline on the map.

Gorge-floor ribbon
Streets run lengthwise along the valley floor, with short cross lanes climbing the slopes. The built-up area forms a long, slender band on the map.

The main route through the city leads west to the Bazargan crossing into Turkey. It has long been part of the overland route between Iran and Europe.
