Malnate lies just outside Varese in northern Lombardy, in the rolling pre-Alpine country between the lakes and the Swiss border. The town is spread across uneven ground. It has an older centre, later neighbourhoods reaching up the slopes, and wooded areas that show as open space between clusters of streets.
The Olona River shapes the southern part of the map. Its valley forms a green corridor that the built-up area steps around rather than across. The valley also carried the old Valmorea railway line, whose route toward Switzerland can still be traced in the landscape.
