Te mapa
Mandan sits on the west bank of the Missouri River, opposite Bismarck, North Dakota's capital. From above, the town is a regular street grid pressed between bluffs and river bottomland. The Heart River curls around its southern edge before it joins the Missouri, and that meeting of two rivers shapes the whole lower half of the map.
The town grew up around the railway, and the tracks still cut a long diagonal through town, with rail yards spread beside them. Interstate 94 runs across the north side, and the bridges to Bismarck reach east over the wide Missouri. To the west and south the grid gives way to rolling prairie, cut by coulees and field lines.
Mandan takes its name from the Mandan people, whose earth-lodge villages once stood along this stretch of the Missouri. Just south of town, Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park preserves a reconstructed village site along with the fort. A Mandan map poster brings the rivers, rail and grid together in one clean composition.
The Heart River loops around the south of town and flows into the broad Missouri, giving the map two very different kinds of water.
The railway and its yards run diagonally through town, a reminder that Mandan grew up as a railroad settlement on the northern plains.
Road and rail bridges span the Missouri to the capital on the east bank, joining the two cities across the water.
