Te mapa
Maoming grew quickly in the second half of the twentieth century around a resource few cities are built on, oil shale. Mining and refining shaped its early plan, and the petrochemical works remain a large presence on the map, drawn as big, regular compounds with internal roads and storage areas that contrast with the finer grain of the residential districts.
The central city spreads across low ground crossed by a river and its smaller tributaries, with blocks arranged in broad, mostly orthogonal patterns. Expressways and rail lines skirt the urban area, and beyond them the lines thin out into a patchwork of villages, fields and orchards that stretches toward the coast of the South China Sea.
A Maoming map poster captures that transition, from dense streets to open country. The wider prefecture is known for lychee growing, especially around Gaozhou, which helps explain the quiet, rural texture at the edges of the sheet.
The refinery and industrial zones appear as large geometric parcels with their own road networks, a clear reminder of the oil shale industry the city was founded on.
A river winds through the urban core, bending the otherwise regular blocks and giving the dense centre a natural line to organise around.
Beyond the ring of expressways, the map dissolves into scattered villages and field tracks, a soft outer border that frames the compact city.
