Highland setting
Maralal sits on elevated, rolling ground. The roads curve with the terrain instead of running straight, and that shows clearly in the map's lines.

Te mapa
Maralal is the administrative centre of Samburu County, in the highlands of northern Kenya. The town sits on rolling, elevated ground, and on a map it shows up as a modest street grid surrounded by open country. The roads leading out of town wind between hills and across rangeland toward the lowlands and neighbouring settlements.
Two things make Maralal known beyond the region. Jomo Kenyatta was detained here before independence, and the house where he stayed is preserved. The town is also famous for its annual camel derby, which draws visitors from across the country. A Maralal map poster places the town within the wider landscape of Samburu, where open space dominates.
In black and white, the map is mostly empty land crossed by a few long, curving roads, with the town itself as a small, detailed centre. The winding routes follow the terrain, and that gives the poster a looser, more organic feel than a map drawn on flat ground.
Maralal sits on elevated, rolling ground. The roads curve with the terrain instead of running straight, and that shows clearly in the map's lines.
Jomo Kenyatta was held in Maralal during the colonial period, and the house linked to his detention remains a known historic site in the town.
Long, winding routes connect the town to the rest of Samburu and northern Kenya, crossing large stretches of open, sparsely settled land.

A Maralal poster suits people from Samburu, travellers who have crossed northern Kenya or visitors to the camel derby. It is a small town set in a wide landscape, and the map shows both.
