Te mapa
Marmara Island is broad and high, with steep slopes that drop to a coast of small bays. On the map, its few settlements hold to the shoreline. The main town sits on the south coast, and villages are spread around the rest of the island. Roads climb inland over the ridges between them, and grey scars on the northern slopes show where marble has been cut for centuries.
In antiquity the island was known as Proconnesus, and its white marble was shipped across the eastern Mediterranean for buildings in Constantinople and beyond. The Greek word for marble is the root of the island's modern name, and through it the name of the whole Sea of Marmara. Quarrying continues today.
A Marmara Island map poster shows a place that is more mountain than lowland. There are winding roads, small harbour towns and a coastline cut into many coves, with smaller neighbouring islands close by in the sea. It is a portrait of the island that gave an entire sea its name, drawn at the scale of its villages.
The northern part of the island carries the working marble quarries. On the map they appear as cleared ground among the hills, the industrial heart of the island's long history.
The main town and its harbour sit on the southern shore, where ferries arrive. It has the island's densest pattern of streets, set between the slopes and the water.
Narrow roads wind over the mountainous interior between villages. Their switchbacks trace the island's height across the poster.
