Te mapa
Martinsburg is the county seat of Berkeley County in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle, in the Shenandoah Valley. From above, the town centre is a compact grid of brick streets around Queen Street and King Street. Tuscarora Creek winds through it, and the railway runs past at an angle to the street pattern.
The town was established in 1778 and grew into an important stop on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Its surviving B&O roundhouse complex is a rare survivor of its kind. In July 1877, the Great Railroad Strike began here before spreading across the country. Interstate 81 now runs along the eastern edge of the town, bringing traffic down the valley.
A Martinsburg map poster captures these layers: the historic grid, the rail corridor, the bends of the creek and the long line of the interstate. It is a clear picture of an American railroad town and the changes of the century after it.
The old centre is laid out in straight blocks around the main streets. It forms the densest, most orderly part of the map.
The railroad crosses the town diagonally, passing the roundhouse complex. It is a reminder of the industry that shaped Martinsburg.
The creek meanders through the town, with a soft line that runs against the grid and marks its path through the valley.
