Massapê is a municipality in the north of Ceará, in the semi-arid sertão of northeastern Brazil, not far from the regional centre of Sobral. The town is small and compact, and its map shows the familiar pattern of interior Brazilian towns: a grid of blocks gathered around a church square, with the main streets carrying most of the commerce.
Beyond the urban core the pattern loosens quickly. Streets become roads, lots become fields, and dirt tracks lead out across dry, flat land dotted with small farms and seasonal watercourses. The edge of the town is clear on the map, a dense patch surrounded by open country.
