Te mapa
Mbuji-Mayi is the capital of Kasai-Oriental province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and one of the country's largest cities. Its growth has been tied closely to diamond mining, which has long been central to the local economy. The map shows a broad, largely low-rise city spread across rolling ground, with dense neighbourhoods of small blocks extending in several directions.
The city takes its name from the Mbuji-Mayi River, which runs along its edge and gives the map a winding line of water and green banks. Mining areas and their access roads appear as more open, irregular zones, contrasting with the fine texture of the residential streets where most of the population lives.
Main roads link the centre with outlying districts and with other towns in the Kasai region, and much of the city has grown outward along them. A Mbuji-Mayi map poster reduces this large and rapidly expanding city to its essential shape: the river, the principal roads and the tight fabric of neighbourhoods that surrounds them.
The Mbuji-Mayi River curves along the city, its valley forming a natural boundary and a clear line through an otherwise dense map.
Thousands of small plots and short streets create a fine, even texture that covers most of the city and reads beautifully in black and white.
Areas linked to diamond extraction appear as more open, irregular spaces, a reminder of the industry around which the city grew.
