Merced lies in the San Joaquin Valley of California, on flat farmland between the Sierra Nevada foothills and the Coast Ranges. From above, the city is organised on a regular grid, aligned with the railroad and Highway 99, which run through it in parallel.
Bear Creek and other creeks cross the city diagonally, adding curves and greenways to the otherwise orderly street pattern, with parks such as Applegate Park along the water. Beyond the city, the land is divided into large rectangular fields and orchards, and to the northeast lies the campus of UC Merced, which opened in 2005.
Merced is known as the Gateway to Yosemite, with highways leading east toward the national park. It is also home to the newest campus of the University of California. A Merced map poster shows the valley's geometry, with its creeks and railway, in a crisp and structured design.
