Mersa is a town in the Amhara region of northern Ethiopia, located on the main highway that connects the country's central highlands to the north. On the map, the road forms the backbone of the town, with most streets branching off it in a narrow band before giving way to farmland and hills.
Like many towns along this route, Mersa grew as a market and stopping place for travellers and farmers from the surrounding countryside. Agriculture dominates the area, and the terrain around the town is shaped by highland valleys and slopes.
