Messaad lies in Djelfa province in central Algeria, south of the provincial capital, in the high steppe where the Saharan Atlas gives way to desert. On a map the town is a dense, well-defined block of streets surrounded by open land, with only a few roads leading away across the plain toward neighbouring settlements.
The region has long been a place of pastoral life and of trade between the north and the Sahara, and the town serves the surrounding area as a market and administrative centre. The remains of a Roman frontier fort, known as Castellum Dimmidi, lie near the town and mark one of the southernmost Roman outposts in the region.
