Te mapa
Metemma lies in the western lowlands of Ethiopia's Amhara region, directly on the border with Sudan, facing the Sudanese town of Gallabat. On a map, the two settlements sit close together on either side of the frontier. The main road from Gondar descends from the highlands and ends at the crossing, the town's most important line.
Metemma has a significant place in Ethiopian history. In 1889 Emperor Yohannes IV was killed at the Battle of Metemma, also called Gallabat, fighting Mahdist forces from Sudan. Today the town is a trade hub where goods and travellers move between the two countries.
A Metemma map poster shows a town shaped by movement. The streets gather along the highway and near the border, while flat, open land spreads around it, crossed by seasonal watercourses and farm tracks. It is a clear picture of a place where two countries meet.
