Miaoli City is the seat of Miaoli County in northwestern Taiwan, between the coastal plain and the Central Mountain Range. It lies in a valley, so the built-up area stretches in a long band along the river and the railway. On both sides, low hills close in and the streets stop where the land begins to rise.
The centre is a compact grid of shopfronts and residential lanes around the railway station. Toward the edges, roads follow the valley or climb into the surrounding hills in winding lines. The river flows along the city with wide embankments, adding a long open band to the map.
