Te mapa
Mykolayiv occupies a peninsula at the confluence of the Inhul and the wide Southern Bug, not far from where the Bug estuary opens toward the Black Sea. Water surrounds the centre on three sides, and on the map the city looks like a block of streets cut out of the land by two rivers, with bridges reaching out to the opposite banks.
The centre was planned in the late eighteenth century, and its streets follow a clear, regular grid of long parallel avenues crossed at right angles. Shipyards line the riverbanks, their slipways and basins visible as large industrial shapes along the water. Beyond the rivers, newer districts spread along both shores, linked by long bridges.
Mykolayiv was founded in 1789 around a shipyard on the Inhul and grew into a major naval shipbuilding centre, building some of the largest vessels of the Soviet era. Its grid, rivers and yards still define its shape. A Mykolayiv map poster captures the peninsula, the waterfronts and the ordered streets between them.
The centre sits on a tongue of land between the Inhul and the Southern Bug, with water wrapping around three sides of the historic grid.
Long, straight avenues run the length of the peninsula and cross each other at right angles, making the centre one of the most orderly street plans in Ukraine.
Shipbuilding yards line the riverbanks, and long bridges cross both rivers, drawing strong lines across the water between the centre and the outer districts.

Koteā ko Mykolayiv
For many, Mykolayiv is a hometown held close from a distance, and a map of its grid and rivers is a calm way to keep it present. The clear geometry of the peninsula makes an image that is instantly recognisable to anyone who knows it.
